Russell
Scott-Skiner is a primarily self taught artist who has been raised throughout
several of the counties in England.
Born on an RAF base in Lincolnshire on October 18th
1979, his family then moved to Kent until he was 10, then his step fathers
career as a vet moved him and his two older brothers to Norfolk. There he
resided throughout his teenage years until completing school at aged 18.
He
then embarked upon a degree in psychology at Loughborough University. Whilst
at Loughborough Russell was meeting a friend at the university's art department
which he describes as a pivotal moment of clarity.
"Walking
into that art department changed my life. I knew straight away from that first
breathe of a studio's air that I had made a wrong career choice. That scent
of paint mixed with turps and primed canvas' ready and virgin without a single
fleck or mark upon them. I understood then what alcoholic's refer to as a moment
of clarity."
He
rapidly withdrew from his degree to pursue a passion. A brief foundation year
followed and an unknown direction for fine art or photography, graphic design
or illustration saw Russell taking time out to decide which direction his art
was developing in.
This
exploration time led Russell back down to Kent where his talent was rapidly
snapped up by several photo studios in the London and the Kent area. He trained
as a photographer and furiously painted in his spare time.
His
abstract work grows from an ability to allow the medium he is using a freedom
to grow in it's own direction. He explains it as an aesthetic lottery or like
raising a child.
"You
can't control it's direction and the true beauty comes out in the details that
you never foresaw building. As soon as you try and control the image it will
writhe under your own frustration and you'll never achieve the true aesthetic.
Like a child you want to become something for you rather than who they truly
are. It's the same principal, the true beauty is in the detail of the imperfections."
There is often a mixture of inks and water colour involved, combined with computer
processing. For further information please feel free to contact him.
His
photography grew to provide him with an income and work schedule to develop
his painting and creative photography style.
Russell
works with a variety of techniques and processes to achieve the end result.
Acrylic and
charcoal
on canvas or paper is the most common medium.
